Like most prepress companies in India, Newgen began as a provider of composition and artwork services to STM publishers. By the late 1990s, we were offering copyediting and indexing services. For many projects, providing discrete editorial services meant time lost in sending work back and forth from India to the publisher to the author to the publisher to India at each correction stage, so Newgen developed project management capabilities that allowed us to work directly with authors throughout a project’s lifecycle. These later developed to include print management services, making Newgen a full-service supplier from manuscript to bound copies. And in 2008, we merged with a development editing company in Ossining, New York—so now Newgen can even create that initial manuscript.

From the start, Newgen’s workflow was based on SGML data. As XML became the common currency of publishing, Newgen pioneered XML workflows and tools in the industry, which allowed us also to offer other electronic deliverables at the end of the production cycle, including all the common e-book formats and CD-Roms.

In response to publishers’ needs to reuse legacy material, Newgen developed a range of conversion services for electronic and printed material. Large-scale backlist conversion projects required that we also develop content management systems for our clients.

As Newgen moved into new publishing markets, customers began to ask whether we could offer illustration and design services from India. In response, Newgen incorporated a design studio, under the brand name Crimson, staffed by graduates of India’s leading design schools.
