| Planning for New Clients |
| When we begin to work with a new client, it is our preference to precede live work with trial work on samples for review by the client. In our experience, this is the most effective way to ensure that requirements are mutually understood. In addition, we encourage regular interaction with, and feedback from, clients.

Editorial careers in the publishing services industry in India have come to be considered prestigious. On this basis, and because Chennai has a world-class system of universities, we are able to recruit and train editors with the subject and language skills required by long-term clients-both fresh postgraduates and older people aiming to change career. |

| Training |
Newgen's training programme for new editors consists of two months of classroom-based teaching and exercises, followed by six months of parallel editing during which a trainee's work is re-edited by an experienced editor, who will provide feedback and additional topical training as required.
The work of copyeditors who have entered independent live production is regularly checked by senior members of the team to ensure that their knowledge remains current.
Copyeditors are assigned to a particular publisher/journal during their training period to ensure familiarity with house style and consistency of service; they are encouraged to interact with clients to establish working practices and resolve uncertainties of stylistic treatment as they arise.
Feedback from clients is discussed and documented, along with all proofreading corrections when we typeset jobs that we have edited, to inform future practice. |

| Capacity and Workload Management |
| The copyediting department's current capacity is around 40,000 typescript folios per month, and we program to work at 85% capacity to allow for ongoing training and so that sudden, temporary volume increases in work can be accommodated. In addition, it is our practice to cross-train editorial team members to work on at least one other publisher's list. This ensures that quality and adherence to house style are not affected when other publishers' editors need to be co-opted to handle exceptional volumes. |

| Editorial Preplanning |
The editorial requirements of our current clients range from simple copy preparation and electronic tagging to full language editing in the case of authors whose first language is not English. In additional to these basic parameters, editors are trained to be sensitive to how the market requirements for different strands of publishing might impact the editing.
New copyediting jobs are reviewed by the team leader on receipt to determine the editorial treatment required and to resolve queries, exceptions, and omissions with the publisher. This practice ensures that titles are passed to the copyeditor best qualified for the work. |

| Online Editing |
| Newgen has developed its own Word-based copy-editing tool for journals and book work. The tool carries out various functions: maintenance of metadata for journal articles, preformatting, structural coding and validation, consistency checking, style sheet adherence, management of special characters, workflow control, and conversion to SGML/XML for typesetting. Journal- and publisher-specific databases sit behind Word so that the editing process can be customized for new journals and new clients |
