Newgen has been providing typesetting services since 1996. Having worked with a range of prestigious academic and scholarly publishers over the years, Newgen brings to each project industry knowledge, experience, and best practices.

In the past year, Newgen has typeset approximately 1,400 books, of which some 560 were project managed and 750 copyedited by us. In addition, we typeset approximately 125 journal articles per week.

Typesetting platforms that adapt to any material

Multiplatform typesetting guarantees the most appropriate tool for the job:

  • QuarkXPress
  • 3B2
  • TeX/LaTeX
  • InDesign
  • Ventura
  • FrameMaker
  • Microsoft Word
Newgen offers design and consulting services to help publishers choose the right platform for both the immediate formatting needs of a project and its archiving and potential repurposing.

Inputs are accepted in the form of author's disks or hard copies (scanned/ typed). Outputs are generated as PS, PDF, hyperlinked PDFs, CRC and films.
QuarkXpress

We use Quark for magazines and books that are heavily designed and illustrated. We also have Xtensions for tables and math setting in Quark. The range of projects for which we use Quark include

  • plain text-trade titles, social science monographs, etc.
  • column text jobs involving significant design work
  • school textbooks
  • colour books and children's books that are design intensive and involve substantial special effects
  • books/journals with simple math
3B2
A very fast and versatile autopagination and conversion system that can paginate from SGML/XML source files, 3B2 is an ideal solution for publishing across different media using full-text SGML/XML and is versatile enough to accept TeX files as input.

Newgen can provide scripts and style templates for 3B2. Our skills in this area enable us to offer turnaround times of less than three days, including copyediting, for journal articles.
TeX and LaTeX
We undertake TeX or LaTeX projects using either client-provided style/class files or our own. TeX is platform independent and is ideal for heavy mathematical and scientific setting.
InDesign

Ventura

FrameMaker

Microsoft Word

A unique solution for simple text, including colour. Word offers a number of sophisticated options to control typography. As most authors use Word to prepare manuscripts, there can be benefits to using Word for typesetting, too:

  • Strong backward compatibility, a large number of conversion filters, and OLE technology all permit near-seamless conversion of manuscripts into typeset files of any degree of complexity.
  • Unicode support for nearly 40,000 characters used in almost any language in the world, including right-to-left scripts such as Hebrew and Arabic, is built in.
  • The high degree of automation reduces the time and potential for error involved in tasks such as generating and updating front and back matter content.
  • The edition cycle becomes simpler because final typesetting files can be passed straight to the author to begin writing the next edition
Word is extensively used for humanities and social sciences titles and also as a pre-typesetting tool for reference books. It significantly reduces the turnaround time as authors' contributions in Word can be manipulated quickly to produce pages. Word can be manipulated as a .COM object to produce XML or OeB files, thereby making it highly versatile for e-publishing.
Artwork and scanning that invite a second glance
Newgen's artwork services include the creation of graphics from conceptual sketches and descriptions, the manipulation of stock images, redrawing and manipulation of author-supplied artwork, and batch processing of images. Outputs can be provided in a range of formats: electronic files for printing, bromides, film, laser proofs, digital proofs, and press-matched wet proofs.

Newgen also offers a comprehensive range of scanning solutions for transparencies, prints, and manual and computer-generated artwork. From line art to halftones, black and white to CMYK, Newgen deploys equipment, people, and processes to deliver dependable quality.
XML/SGML-based workflows that are future proof
Newgen was early to realize the importance of the Internet in academic publishing and has spearheaded several innovations in making material Web ready. Robust XML/SGML-based workflows ensure data integrity through the production process: a single data stream sits behind the typeset and online pages.

Whatever the level of tagging, from structural to semantic, Newgen can build validation tools that go well beyond simple parsing. In addition, such in-house developments as Word-XML-Word, OeB, and Palm conversion solutions illustrate Newgen's expertise in handling complex tagged data.
